Only in San Francisco can 30 museums be found scattered over 49 square miles, some one-of-a-kind. Among them are the Cartoon Art Museum, the nation’s only facility dedicated to preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in all its forms; the Golden Gate Railroad Museum, started when a pharmacist idly asked the San Mateo Fairgrounds director about a steam engine languishing in the parking lot, and Mission Dolores, the city’s oldest intact building, also the only intact mission chapel of 21 established by Father Junipero Serra.
